The book you are holding in your hands, written by Mehmed Zahid Kotku Hocaefendi (rha.), was previously published under the title Ana Baba Hakları (Parents' Rights). However, upon examination of the original Ottoman manuscript, it was understood that the author had not given the book a title.
Since the title ‘Rights of Parents’ was not given by the author and in order to cover the content more comprehensively, the title ‘Rights and Duties’ was deemed more appropriate for the book.
Although the book focuses primarily on the rights of parents over their children, it also covers the following topics in outline form: The rights of Allah over His servants, the rights of our Prophet over his ummah, the rights of scholars, the rights of parents over their children, the rights of children over their parents, the rights of husband and wife over each other, the rights of neighbours, the rights of relatives, the rights of animals, the rights of the state, the nation and the homeland, sins to be avoided, and the levels of the soul.
Unlike previous works, this book provides translations of verses that have not been translated before, indicates which surah each verse belongs to, and cites the sources of the hadiths. Some of the original words of the wise and poems have been identified and their sources given. Some words in the text that we thought would be difficult for people today to understand have been simplified, at least in part. A bibliography has been included at the end of the work and an analytical index has been prepared to facilitate its use.
The original manuscript of the work, written in Ottoman Turkish using Arabic script, is a large, unlined, thick, white notebook.
