This book consists of the editorials written by the late Mahmud Es'ad Coşan Hocaefendi for the journals İlim ve Sanat (Science and Art) and Panzehir, which he brought into print.
The first issue of the İlim ve Sanat journal was published in May 1985, and it ceased publication with its 48th issue in 1998. The journal covered a wide range of topics, including communication, education, the European Community, democracy, law, energy, the environment, and urban planning. These topics were addressed by experts in their respective fields. The journal attracted the attention of various segments of society with its style, target audience, approach to topics, and presentation format, serving as an educational institution throughout its publication life.
The journal's target audience consists of a broad circle of scholars and intellectuals, including university faculty members, individuals educated abroad, high-ranking administrators, expert planners, and mature personalities.
The editorials thoroughly explored the understanding of science and art that Muslims possess and should possess; material and spiritual salvation; methodical work, scientific research, careful monitoring of innovations and developments in the outside world, and the importance of being new, original, constructive, and productive.
The idea that our noble ancestors were pioneers not only in heroism but also in science and art, that they advanced and rose by relying on both reason and heart, that they conquered continents, and that they established civilisations of high material and spiritual value has been emphasised. Science and knowledge, thought and art have been called upon to open new horizons and shed light on all humanity.
The articles were published in chronological order, first in the journal ‘Science and Art,’ and then in the journal ‘Panzehir.’ In this way, the intellectual thought and struggle of Hocaefendi, as well as his perspective and stance on political and social events, will be followed.
